SIR 2020 cancellation and FAQs


On March 4, the Seattle and King County Public Health Department issued new public health recommendations to help prevent the spread of the COVID-19 novel coronavirus. Among these recommendations was a request to organizers of large public gatherings to avoid bringing large groups of people together and consider postponing events and gatherings.

Based on these recommendations, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and World Health Organization (WHO) information, and numerous travel restrictions issued by companies and medical institutions,  SIR and SIR Foundation leadership have made the difficult, but necessary and responsible, decision to cancel the SIR 2020 Annual Scientific Meeting in Seattle. 

We have given the situation deep consideration and want to provide all attendees with ample opportunity to manage air travel, hotel reservations and personal schedules. We also want to respect our physicians’ need to be on call back in their own communities and countries. 

Preparing for the conference involves the time, talent and ideas of a great many of our physician volunteers, speakers, exhibitors and event partners. We’re incredibly grateful for this and deeply disappointed not to be able to host you at this time. 

Below, you will find information to answer the immediate questions regarding cancellations. 

In the coming weeks, we will tap into the innovative and agile spirit of this specialty to explore virtual meeting options that deliver world-class education, spotlight IR’s ingenuity and celebrate the many achievements we had planned to recognize in Seattle. Through regularly posted updates on and our other member communications channels, we will keep all SIR 2020 participants apprised of our plans to deliver the research, sessions and presentations you value.  

In closing, we want everyone to know that utmost in our decision is SIR’s core purpose and mission: to work with and on behalf of our members to improve lives through image-guided therapy. This is true in the products and services we deliver, the voice we bring to important policy and public venues, the research we inspire and the collaborations we value with industry and other healthcare providers. However, the rapidly changing circumstances and unknown nature of this virus are such that we must consider the safety and wellbeing of not just our meeting participants and staff, but their families, colleagues and patients. We would never knowingly do anything to harm the trust you place in us, and in turn, your patients place in you.
