Care of the lactating patient is rarely a topic that is addressed during interventional radiology (IR) residency training. For questions related to these patients, interventional radiologists often defer to our obstetrics and gynecology colleagues or, alternatively, may unnecessarily recommend cessation of breastfeeding or withholding of breastmilk from a child in the periprocedural period. Understanding the basics of caring for this patient population can help to improve patient care and satisfaction and lead to potentially less disruption of the breastfeeding relationship between mother and baby.
Clinical Findings/Procedure Details:
This exhibit will highlight several of the most common medications used in IR including those for anxiolysis, pain control, and anticoagulation. Recommendations for optimal choice of medication in the lactating patient as well as recommendations for cessation or continuation of breastfeeding with these medications will be discussed. The potential risk of radiation exposure to the breasts of lactating women will also be reviewed.
Conclusion and/or Teaching Points:
There is a deficit in IR training on the care of lactating patients undergoing interventional procedures, which may lead to unnecessarily restrictive recommendations given to the patient. This educational exhibit will provide a comprehensive overview of IR care management of this patient population. With this information summarized in an IR-centric manner, interventional radiologists will be armed with a clinically relevant tool which will aid in counseling and caring for lactating patients.
