The field of neuromodulation and its potential application to a broad variety of common chronic conditions will be described. Sympathetic overactivity has been shown to contribute to hypertension, insulin resistance, obstructive sleep apnea, heart failure, and renal disease. Two devices for treatment of hypertension by renal artery denervation have received FDA approval this year. A massive number of patients are potential candidates for intervention. In addition, various forms of denervation are being investigated in several other diseases such as insulin resistance, chronic kidney disease, loin pain hematuria syndrome, and cancer pain, among others. Interventional radiologist procedural skill sets , professional relationships and patient management skills are ideally suited to perform these procedures.
