Description of the session: This session is a categorical course on portal hypertension. Portal hypertension is most commonly secondary to cirrhosis and leads to severe complications such as variceal bleeding, ascites, hepatic hydrothorax, or encephalopathy. These complications can severely impact patient quality of life, and prognosis. Medical malmanagement is the first step in the dealing with portal hypertension complications. The current session will review the etiology, pathogenesis, imaging, complications, and recent advances in the medical management of portal hypertension.
