Background: To highlight the development, fundamental engineering, clinical applications, and upcoming innovations of embolization coils, providing interventional radiologists with a framework for optimal device selection and insight into future directions of coil technology

Clinical Findings/Procedure Details: This exhibit explores the progression of embolization coils, beginning with their adaptation from guidewires in the 1970s to the sophisticated detachable and coated designs used today. Core engineering concepts, including coil metallurgy, winding patterns, and how these contribute to mechanism of occlusion as well as deliverability are described with diagrams for clarity. Indications, patient populations, and common contraindications for coil embolization are summarized. A comparative review of pushable versus detachable designs, bare metal versus fibered versus hydrogel-coated devices, and their respective strengths and limitations is presented in both narrative and tabular form, including approximate cost considerations. The concept of the “ideal coil” is explored in relation to clinical demands, such as ease of deployment, high packing density, resistance to migration, long-term durability, and affordability. Future innovations, including bioactive coatings, physiologically responsive materials, and 3D-printed coils tailored to patient anatomy, are also detailed.
