This immersive Deep Dive is designed to upskill interventional specialists by providing a comprehensive, evidence-based exploration of carotid artery stenting (CAS) and related techniques. Participants will review current standards of care, including medical therapy and carotid endarterectomy (CEA) while focusing on the expanding role of CAS in both asymptomatic and symptomatic disease, as well as its emerging application in acute ischemic stroke.
Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the rationale and evidence supporting carotid artery stenting (CAS) and TCAR across various patient populations, strengthen their skills in interpreting carotid duplex, transcranial Doppler (TCD), CTA, and MRA imaging for procedural planning, and develop the expertise to evaluate new stent and embolic protection technologies in the context of evolving reimbursement and coding considerations. Hands-on, vendor-supported simulation stations will provide practical experience in stent deployment and embolic protection, while multidisciplinary case discussions will reinforce evidence-based decision-making to optimize patient outcomes. This deep dive is a prime opportunity to refine technical skills, integrate new data, and elevate expertise in carotid intervention.
Learning Objectives:
Evaluate current evidence-based medical management strategies for carotid disease, including antiplatelet and statin therapy, compare outcomes data between CEA and carotid artery stenting (CAS) across symptomatic and asymptomatic patient populations, and interpret the key findings and limitations of the CREST and CREST-2 trials and their implications for clinical practice.
Identify appropriate antiplatelet and anticoagulation regimens for patients undergoing carotid artery stenting, compare femoral and radial access approaches for CAS, including catheter and wire selection strategies for each, and differentiate open- and closed-cell stent designs and tapered versus non-tapered configurations, and articulate the clinical rationale for each
Identify the correct CPT codes and documentation requirements for carotid artery stenting procedures, describe the technical challenges of carotid stenting for tandem occlusions in acute stroke treatment, and describe the technical challenges and management strategies for complex lesion morphologies including ulcerating plaques, dissections, and carotid webs along with emerging technologies TCAR and intravascular lithotripsy. Finally, a Hand-on-workshop to demonstrate proper technique for stent deployment and embolic protection device use in a simulation environment.
