Learning Objectives: The objective of this educational exhibit is to discuss innovation in radiation safety within interventional radiology (IR). The exhibit will cover the fundamentals of radiation exposure, essential tools and techniques, current best practices, and emerging technologies designed to improve the safety of both patients and operators.

Background: Radiation exposure is an inherent risk in interventional radiology, affecting both patients and healthcare providers. As the complexity and frequency of IR procedures increase, ensuring radiation safety has become increasingly critical. Effective radiation safety practices not only help prevent procedural complications and mitigate long-term risks but also raise awareness to dispel fears and misconceptions that might otherwise act as barriers to advancing the field.

Clinical Findings/Procedure Details: In this exhibit, we will 1) review the principles of radiation exposure and dose management in IR, including guidelines from CIRSE and SIR; 2) examine tools and techniques for radiation monitoring and exposure reduction, including personal protective equipment and procedural best practices; 3) discuss practical considerations for daily operations in the IR suite, contrasting ideal guidelines with real-world applications; and 4) explore new and emerging technologies and future trends, such as modular scatter protection systems, exoskeleton-supported lead aprons, robotic solutions for remote access, and AI-augmented video frame interpolation.

Conclusion and/or Teaching Points: To minimize radiation exposure in interventional radiology, adherence to safety protocols is essential. Operators must remain aware of dose limits, utilize protective equipment, and implement effective dose-reduction strategies during procedures. Practical training, regular monitoring, and the adoption of technological advancements are crucial for safeguarding both patients and providers. Proactive measures not only improve safety and efficacy but also support the field’s growth and long-term success.
