Portal Hypertension Management Based on Indications: Bleeding, Ascites, Hepatic Encephalopathy

Session will focus on the role of TIPS and associated interventions in the management of portal hypertension based on indications for therapy. Topics to be discussed include variceal bleeding, ascites/hydrothorax, presence of hepatic encephalopathy, isolated gastric varices, presence of porto-mesenteric thrombosis, and sinistral portal hypertension. Physiology, anatomy, and unique approaches to therapy based on clinical circumstances will be discussed.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define the pathophysiology of ascites and hydrothorax in the presence of portal hypertension.
  • Identify appropriate patients TIPS versus PARTO based on clinical presentation and imaging findings.
  • Describe approach to portal decompression in patients at high risk for hepatic encephalopathy.
