To evaluate publication rates and factors effecting publication of abstracts in SIR 2018 annual meeting.
Materials and Methods:
Abstracts from SIR 2018 annual meeting scientific program were reviewed. 11 different topics and 6 study design categories were identified. Country of the last author, number of authors, sample size, follow-up (F/U) span in months were recorded. Studies with positive conclusions were recorded as positive. To ascertain the publication status, a search was performed in PubMed using the first author's name along with relevant study keywords. In instances where no results were obtained alternative authors were searched, and the search was repeated on Google Scholar. A study was considered published if at least one author appeared in a paper with the same context and conclusions as the original abstract. Data on the journal of publication, timing, author count, citation numbers, and the journal's impact factor from the preceding year were also recorded. Statistical analyses were carried out using appropriate testing methods.
Results: There were 713 abstracts in the scientific program in SIR 2018 (406 oral [56.9%], 307 poster presentations [43.1%]). The most common topic was “oncology” (oral presentation: 159 [39.1%], poster presentation: 81, [26.3%]) and design was “retrospective study” in both presentations (oral: 308 [75.9%], poster: 263 [85.7%]). Most abstracts were submitted from the US (585 [82%]) followed by South Korea (31 [4%]) and China (19 [3%]). Median author count was 6 (IQR: 4), sample size was 61 (IQR:154). 662 (93%) study were positive, 339 (47.5%) had F/U information where median F/U was 9 months (IQR: 21). 295 (41.4%) study were published during the 5-year period (oral: 192 [47.3%], poster: 103 [33.5%]). Most publications were at JVIR (92, [31.2%]) followed by CVIR (27, [9.1%]). Median publication interval was 20 months (IQR: 22), IF was 2.76 (IQR: 1.23), citation was 3 (IQR:6) and author count was 8 (IQR:4). When published, author count has been increased in 177 (60%) studies. Randomized controlled studies (n = 7, [1%]) and prospective cohorts (n = 48, [7%]) were highly associated with publication in post-hoc analysis (p = 0.001). Presence of F/U information was significantly associated with publication (p = 0.001) along with increased duration of F/U (p = 0.04). Oral presentations also significantly had higher rate of publication than poster presentations (p = 0.001).
Conclusion: 41.4% of scientific abstracts in SIR 2018 were published throughout 5-year span. Study design, F/U information and presentation type were significant factors for publication.
