To evaluate the involvement and contributions of interventional radiologists in the formulation and implementation of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines.
Materials and Methods: A comprehensive review of 64 NCCN guidelines was conducted, focusing on sections and recommendations where interventional radiology procedures and techniques are mentioned. The participation of interventional radiologists in guideline committees, their roles, and the frequency of their contributions were assessed.
Results: The study identified the participation of interventional radiologists in various cancer types within the NCCN guidelines.
Conclusion:
Interventional Radiology has made great strides in the oncologic space through a combination of technological advances, minimally-invasive treatment options, and good procedural outcomes. The recognition and inclusion of these efforts in the main oncologic guidelines, the NCCN guidelines, has increased significantly over the past few years. As it stands today, Interventional radiologists have a significant presence in the NCCN guideline panels, reflecting the importance of the specialty in modern oncologic care. The contributing expertise is evident across various cancer types, with notable contributions in areas like Biliary Tract Cancers and Hepatocellular Carcinoma. After reviewing 64 distinct guidelines, the continued collaboration between interventional radiologists and other oncologic specialties is crucial for the advancement of patient care and the evolution of the NCCN guidelines.
