Management of cancer related pain is complex. Patients with primary or metastatic cancer involving the acetabulum and lower extremity often present with prolonged, severe pain refractory to analgesics. Adjunctive therapies for refractory cancer related pain are imperative. While the role of femoral nerve block in the management of musculoskeletal pain is well established, its role in alleviating cancer-related pain is unclear.
Clinical Findings/Procedure Details:
Refractory cancer-related pain of the lower extremity is often poorly controlled. Adjunctive treatments including femoral nerve blockade can improve refractory pain in these patients. Familiarity with common anatomic landmarks for ultrasound and fluoroscopic-guided femoral nerve block and understanding common pitfalls can increase technical and clinical success.
