Virchow Medical is a San Diego–based medical technology company focused on optimizing tissue utilization during image-guided core needle biopsies of solid tumors. The company’s flagship device, the Crow’s Nest® Biopsy Catchment System, is designed for use by interventional radiologists during standard percutaneous biopsy procedures.

Crow’s Nest integrates into existing workflows without requiring additional needle passes, increased radiation exposure, or changes to standard technique. The system captures tumor cells and free nucleic acids adherent to the biopsy needle that are typically discarded as medical waste, generating a formalin-free liquid companion specimen suitable for downstream molecular and next-generation sequencing analyses.

By preserving 100 percent of the solid tumor core for histopathologic evaluation while supporting molecular testing from the companion specimen, the system addresses common causes of quantity-not-sufficient results and tissue exhaustion, with the potential to reduce repeat biopsies while maintaining standard-of-care practices.
