Yes. There is a 2,200-character count limit for abstract submissions. Abstracts in excess of the character limit will not be submittable. Spaces are not included in the character count. The abstract title, authors, and optional references are not counted towards the character count.
JVIR encourages the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve grammar, spelling, and readability of submissions, and is aligned with the recommendations of ICMJE, WAME, and CSE. Where authors use artificial intelligence (AI) and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process, authors must:
  1. Only use these technologies to improve readability and language, not to replace key researcher tasks such as interpreting data or drawing scientific conclusions.
  2. Apply the technology with human oversight and control, and carefully review and edit the result, since AI can generate authoritative-sounding output that can be incorrect, incomplete or biased.
  3. Do not list AI and AI-assisted technologies as an author or co-author, or cite AI as an author. Authorship implies responsibilities and tasks that can only be attributed to and performed by humans.
  4. Disclose in the manuscript the use of AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process by following the instructions below.
AI Disclosure instructions
  1. Authors must disclose the use of AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process by adding a statement at the end of their manuscript in a new section entitled ‘Declaration of AI and AI-assisted technologies in the writing process’. Statement: During the preparation of this work the author(s) used [NAME TOOL / SERVICE] in order to [REASON]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) reviewed and edited the content as needed and take(s) full responsibility for the content of the publication. This declaration even applies to the use of AI for checking grammar, spelling, etc.
  2. Authors must submit a list of the prompts used in the preparation or editing of the manuscript.
Yes. You may add up to one table to your submission. Tables are optional and will appear at the end of your abstract, both on the proof and for publication; tables cannot be placed within the text of the submission. Only characters will count toward your total character count; spaces and borders do not count.

You may submit ONLY one (1) table per abstract. If there is more than one (1) table submitted, the first one will be used for the JVIR Supplement.

Please use the provided table builder to add a table to your abstract. Graphics, external links, and drop boxes are not accepted.
Late-breaking abstract submission requests will be approved on a case-by-case basis. If you have research that constitutes late-breaking data that will not be available by September 26, please email annualmeeting@sirweb.org to submit your intent for approval. Of note, these data should be noteworthy as well. In general, abstracts that are submitted with data that were not available by the deadline but are not particularly noteworthy/newsworthy will be given lower priority. Late-breaking submissions will only be considered for oral presentations, which will take place during a scientific session. The late-breaking submission portal will open on December 4th, and authors will have a two-week window to submit their abstracts. Invitations will be sent to those who have expressed their intent in advance.
Your abstract must be submitted as Original Scientific Research. Abstracts accepted as Original Scientific Research will be selected for an oral presentation or a traditional poster, depending on the overall results and reviewer recommendations. Traditional Posters will be printed and brought onsite to the meeting, where they will be displayed in the Poster Hall Sunday through Wednesday. Traditional poster presenters must attend the Scientific Poster Presentation session on Monday, March 31, from noon to 1 pm, to discuss their work and be judged by a reviewer panel for consideration for the Best Traditional Poster recognition.

There are two types of abstract submissions: Original Scientific Research and Educational Exhibit.

Original Scientific Research: A structured abstract is required and should be organized into the following four paragraphs:
  1. Purpose
  2. Materials and methods
  3. Results
  4. Conclusions
For further details, refer to the Instructions for Authors at jvir.org.

Educational Exhibit: Intended for educational exhibits that highlight a technique, concept or subject, rather than hypothesis-driven research. The material in this category is unsuitable for scientific abstract presentation. Examples include a review of a topic, "how-to" demonstrations and pictorial essays. A structured, 4-part abstract is required with the format:
  1. Learning objectives
  2. Background
  3. Clinical findings/procedure details
  4. Conclusion or teaching points
Abstracts accepted as educational exhibits will be presented on Monday, March 31, 2025, from 4:45 - 5:45 pm as oral 3-minute presentations with 2 minutes for questions and judged by a reviewer panel for consideration for the Best Educational Exhibit presentation recognition.
The submitting author must verify at the time of submission that the material is their own and that it will not have been published as a manuscript prior to presentation at the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting. More data, whether by sample size, duration of follow-up, new data abstraction, etc., of previously published or presented work may be acceptable, pending review. Please email annualmeeting@sirweb.org with the proposed changes.
In keeping with the mission of JVIR, only original scientific abstracts, both oral and traditional paper posters, will be published in the JVIR supplement. Accepted educational exhibits will not be published in the JVIR supplement but will be published separately on jvir.org. All accepted abstracts will be available for viewing on sirmeeting.org and in the annual meeting app.
The JVIR editor-in-chief and the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting Committee strongly encourage you to submit your full manuscript for potential publication in JVIR before the meeting or shortly afterward. Please submit your article through Elsevier's Manuscript Submission System at jvir.orgIMPORTANT: Before submitting your manuscript, make sure you consult our "Instructions for Authors/Manuscript Preparation Guidelines" at jvir.org/authorinfo. For questions, please contact the submissions management team at jvir@sirweb.org.
Material may not be submitted to SIR that was previously presented at any national medical specialty meeting within the United States. Work may be submitted to SIR that was presented outside the United States or at local or regional meetings within the United States or at a national meeting within the United States primarily attended by non-radiologists.

Requests for exemptions of work presented at national-level US radiology meetings are honored on a case-by-case basis. To request an exemption or for further details regarding this policy, please email annualmeeting@sirweb.org
Yes. Abstracts submitted for presentation at any other national scientific radiology meeting within the United States may be submitted for presentation at SIR. If the work submitted to the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting is accepted for presentation at another national scientific radiology meeting within the United States the abstract must first be presented at SIR.
Any abstract accepted for presentation by another scientific meeting after submission to the SIR meeting must be disclosed by the submitting author to SIR in writing. If the abstract is accepted for presentation at SIR, a publication waiver in favor of JVIR must also be obtained from the secondary meeting. SIR reserves the right to revoke abstract acceptance if a waiver in favor of JVIR is not obtained. Once an abstract is accepted for presentation at SIR it may not be submitted or presented at any other meeting without a written waiver from SIR.
Yes. We encourage interested high school students to submit an Educational Exhibit abstract. This opportunity allows them to present results from summer and thesis research and network with other IRs. Accepted Educational Exhibits will be presented on Monday, March 31, 2025, from 4:45 to 5:45 pm.

Medical students have the option to submit either an Educational Exhibit or an Original Scientific Research abstract. For those submitting an Original Scientific Research abstract, it is mandatory to include a practicing Interventional Radiologist (IR) as a co-author. This IR must serve as the guarantor and be present during the presentation if the abstract is accepted.
All presenting authors are required to register for the SIR 2025 Annual Scientific Meeting. Abstract presenting authors are not eligible for speaker registration discounts.
Authors of scientific abstracts must be prepared to deliver their material orally or as a poster. There is no provision for "oral presentation only." Abstracts cannot be withdrawn once submitted nor will the format (oral or poster presentation) be modified after acceptance by the Annual Scientific Meeting Committee.

Upon notification of acceptance, abstract presenters must confirm that they will appear for the presentation at the stated date and time, or that a poster will be provided by the start of the meeting. The presentation times will not be adjusted once the scientific program is set. Absence from a scientific presentation or failure to provide an accepted poster at the start of the meeting will expose the presenting author, as well as all co-authors, to potential sanctions as described in the below "sanctions policy." The Annual Scientific Meeting Committee reserves the right to waive abstract withdrawal sanctions under extraordinary circumstances only.
Failure to adhere to standards may expose both submitting and co-authors to professional sanctions up to and including exclusion from the SIR scientific program for a period of up to three (3) years. The SIR Annual Meeting Committee reserves the right to refer any and all information related to possible professional misconduct to the author's institution of record.
If you have any additional questions, please email annualmeeting@sirweb.org.
