SIR Stroke Course (CME activity)
Saturday, March 29, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. CTMusic City Center, Nashville
For interventional radiologists interested or experienced in cerebral angiography, carotid revascularization, and/or endovascular stroke thrombectomy, the 2025 SIR Stroke Course will provide participants with the latest in stroke education offering more than 8.5 hours of CME credit. Topics from the multidisciplinary faculty include stroke pathophysiology, the latest updates on stroke trials, emerging areas for endovascular thrombectomy, challenging interventions in refractory and tandem occlusion cases, and case presentations.
Program objectives
Upon completion of this course, an attendee should be able to:
- Discuss Ischemic Stroke Pathophysiology
- Interpret Acute Ischemic Stroke Imaging Studies
- Explain Basic and Advanced techniques for Endovascular Thrombectomy (EVT)
- Implement techniques for treatment of Tandem Carotid Occlusions

Course guidelines
In September 2019, SIR published updated training guidelines for IRs performing endovascular thrombectomy to treat patients suffering from acute ischemic stroke. The training guidelines were published on the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology (JVIR) website.
The training guidelines detail the cognitive and procedural skills interventional radiologists must obtain and maintain to effectively treat patients using endovascular thrombectomies (EVTs), including patient diagnosis and selection; brain imaging competencies; clinical patient care before, during and after the procedure; and the ability to identify and manage complications. The new guidelines will ensure IRs stay current in the performance of this life-changing and function-saving treatment.
Read the full guidelines.
In addition to the guidelines, JVIR also published a commentary from SIR President Laura Findeiss, MD, FSIR, reflecting the important role IRs have played in caring for acute ischemic stroke patients and outlining SIR’s current quality and advocacy efforts. SIR leaders are engaged in ongoing discussions with the Joint Commission and other stakeholder organizations to ensure experienced and appropriately trained IRs continue to be included on stroke teams. This collaboration with other specialty societies and oversight bodies is focused on working towards a common understanding of quality standards in this area of interventional practice.

Continuing Medical Education (CME)
Purpose/Desired Learning OutcomeAt the end of this activity, learners will be able to interpret acute ischemic stroke imaging studies, perform basic and advanced techniques for endovascular thrombectory (EVT), and implement techniques for treatment of tandem carotid occulusions.
